In the case of language, there is, for instance, no essential connection between the word ‘cloud’ and the real-life material object. Symbols are signified by convention and they have to be learned by people (Berger, 2010). The symbol is a sign where the relation between signifier and signified is arbitrary. Moreover, Pierce expands this study by separating the sign into three different kinds: Symbol, icon, and Index. Our culture associates this words with a domesticated animal, however unlike if we came from another culture which does not know it, we would not understand what this signifier means. Saussure claims this to be culturally created rather than made by nature. It is a concept, an idea, a mental concept associated with the signifier creates the meaning of a sign. The first one is a signifier, a physical object, a word, a gesture and so on. Saussure claims that a sign consists of two concepts which are in unity. Saussure is focused on linguistics while the Peirce is responsible for the explanation of logical thinking.īerger in her The Objects of Affection (2010), mentions that “the basic unit of semiotics is the sign” (Berger, 2010, p.3). It was found by Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce who are both focusing on different aspects when explaining this field of study. It is a field of study which helps us to understand the establishment of the meanings. “Semiotics is defined as the study of signs, or of the social production of meanings and pleasures by sign systems, or the study of how things come to have significance” (Branston, 2003, p.
